The Caliber Armor AR550 Level III+ Multi-Curve Body Armor Plate Set delivers steel plate protection rated to NIJ STD-0101.06 Level III+ against a wide range of rifle threats, including M855 special threats. Built from AR550 steel with an ergonomic multi-curve profile, these plates are available in 8x10, 10x12, and 11x14 sizes across Shooters Cut and SAPI Style Cut geometries, with or without PolyShield Fragmentation Coating. Manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, and backed by a 20-year warranty.
AR550 steel is a high-hardness alloy chosen specifically for body armor applications. These plates are rated to NIJ STD-0101.06 Level III+ and tested against special threats including M855 (SS109) green-tip 5.56x45 at standard velocity. NIJ Level III baseline coverage includes common rifle threats such as 7.62x51 NATO M80 ball. The Level III+ designation extends that protection to higher-velocity rounds and M855 penetrator projectiles that fall outside the standard NIJ Level III test matrix.
Steel plates are rated for multiple impacts while remaining structurally intact. Unlike ceramic plates, AR550 steel does not shatter or delaminate after a first hit, making these plates a reliable option in multi-hit scenarios. PolyShield Fragmentation Coating coats the strike face to capture spall and fragmentation that would otherwise disperse on bullet impact, significantly reducing fragmentation risks to the wearer and bystanders.
These plates ship as a set. Three size options cover the standard plate pocket range used by most modern plate carriers: 8x10 Shooters Cut, 10x12 Shooters Cut, 10x12 SAPI Style Cut, and 11x14 Shooters Cut. The multi-curve profile uses a single ergonomic press to contour the plate to the body, reducing hotspots and improving weight distribution during extended wear at no additional cost over a flat-plate configuration. The Shooters Cut trims the upper corners of the plate to create clearance for stock weld and shoulder rotation, improving rifle-handling ergonomics. The SAPI Style Cut follows the trapezoidal military SAPI geometry and suits carriers with SAPI-specific plate pockets. Both cuts fit the standard 10x12 pocket found on the majority of civilian and law enforcement plate carriers.
The 10x12 Shooters Cut, 10x12 SAPI Cut, and 11x14 Shooters Cut variants with PolyShield coating carry NIJ STD-0101.06 Level III+ certification. If your carrier requires a specific cut confirmation, contact us before ordering.
The 10x12 footprint is the most common plate size in civilian and law enforcement plate carriers. Both the Shooters Cut and SAPI Style Cut in 10x12 fit the standard 10x12 plate pocket. The 8x10 size suits smaller-frame carriers or side-plate pockets on extended coverage systems. The 11x14 size targets full-coverage carriers designed for that larger format. The multi-curve geometry fits the natural contour of most torsos without requiring a shaped or curved-specific plate pocket — standard flat-pocket carriers accept these plates without modification. For confirmation that a specific carrier accepts the cut and size you need, contact us.
These plates stop NIJ Level III threats including 7.62x51 NATO M80 ball and are additionally rated against M855 (SS109) 5.56x45 green-tip special threats. AR550 steel is designed to withstand multiple impacts while remaining structurally intact. They are not rated against Level IV armor-piercing rounds such as M2AP 30-caliber.
NIJ Level III covers common rifle threats up to 7.62x51 NATO M80 ball. Level III+ is a vendor-designated special threat rating that extends coverage to higher-velocity rounds and penetrator projectiles such as M855 not included in the standard Level III test. Level IV is the highest NIJ rifle rating and covers armor-piercing rounds including M2AP. These AR550 plates are rated Level III+.
PolyShield Fragmentation Coating is applied to the strike face of the plate to capture spall and fragmentation generated on bullet impact, significantly reducing the risk of secondary fragment injury. Steel plates produce more spall on impact than ceramic or UHMWPE plates. PolyShield is strongly recommended for any use outside of range practice, and is required for the NIJ-certified variants. It adds roughly 13–14 oz per plate depending on size.
Shooters Cut trims the upper corners of the plate to create clearance for rifle stock weld and shoulder rotation, improving handling ergonomics for shooters. SAPI Style Cut follows the trapezoidal military SAPI geometry and is required by carriers with SAPI-specific plate pockets. Both cuts are available in 10x12. Only Shooters Cut is available in 8x10 and 11x14.
A standard 10x12 two-plate setup in Shooters Cut weighs 14 lbs 12 oz with Standard Coating, or 17 lbs 2 oz with PolyShield. The 8x10 two-plate setup runs 9 lbs 12 oz (Standard) or 11 lbs 6 oz (PolyShield). Two 11x14 Shooters Cut plates total 17 lbs 10 oz (Standard) or 19 lbs 10 oz (PolyShield).
These plates cannot be shipped to New York or Connecticut due to state body armor restrictions. Export outside the United States is subject to Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) — re-transfer to any foreign end user without written approval from the U.S. Department of Commerce or Department of State is prohibited. Under 18 U.S.C. § 931, anyone with a federal felony conviction for a crime of violence is prohibited from purchasing or possessing body armor.
