1. Purpose

This harness transmits vital engine data—such as RPM, oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel burn, and diagnostic fault codes—from the engine's Engine Control Module (ECM) to the helm station display.

2. Technology

It is built to support the SmartCraft® protocol and J1939 CAN bus communication. Because it is a "Marine" grade part, the harness features:

• Gold-plated or tin-plated pins to prevent corrosion from salt air.

• Heavy-duty jacketing to resist heat, oil, and vibration found in engine rooms.

• Watertight connectors (often Deutsch or Amphenol style) to ensure the signal isn't interrupted by moisture.

3. Components

A typical kit may include the backbone cable, T-junctions, and terminating resistors required to complete the data network between the engine and the dashboard.

1. Intermittent Data or "Ghost" Readings

The screen may flicker, or engine data (like RPM or Temp) might suddenly drop to zero and then return to normal. This usually indicates a loose pin or a break in the internal wire caused by engine vibration.

2. "Communication Lost" or "No Data" Errors

If the DieselView display stays powered on but shows a "Data Link Disconnected" or "No Engine Communication" message, the J1939 CAN bus wires inside the harness are likely broken or corroded.

3. Corrosion at the Connectors

If you unplug the harness and see green or white powdery residue (oxidation) on the pins, moisture has breached the seal. This creates high resistance and prevents the digital signal from reaching the display.

4. Blown Fuses or Screen Power Issues

A short circuit within the harness jacket—often caused by the wires rubbing against a sharp metal edge in the engine room—can cause the system fuse to blow repeatedly or prevent the screen from turning on at all.
