The Predator Armor Level III+ Body Armor Plate is manufactured in the USA from ballistic-grade AR650 steel using a proprietary heat-treating, quenching, and tempering process that produces an extra-hardened steel plate. Available in a 10" x 12" Shooters Cut in flat or multicurve profiles, each plate measures 0.25" thick and weighs approximately 7.5 lbs. An optional Kevlar-lined spall and fragmentation containment layer adds meaningful protection beyond the base coating. Every plate is independently tested and certified to NIJ 0101.06 standards by NTS-Chesapeake, an NIJ-approved testing facility accredited by NVLAP and A2LA to ISO 17025.
AR650 ballistic steel sits a grade above the more common AR500 and AR550 alloys. The unique heat-treating, quenching, and tempering process drives hardness higher than standard AR500 steel, enabling a thinner 0.25" profile without reducing the ballistic protection level. The result is a Special Threat Rated Level III+ plate capable of handling threats above the NIJ 0101.06 Level III standard.
Every plate ships with a base coat that provides durable, water-resistant surface protection. That base coat does not provide fragmentation mitigation. The optional Kevlar lining wraps the plate to contain spall and fragmentation, and also enhances the overall ballistic performance of the armor. If your carrier or plate does not already include anti-fragmentation characteristics, adding the Kevlar lining is strongly advised. The plate is also stab and slash resistant.
These plates are cut to a standard 10" x 12" Shooters Cut profile, the most widely accepted format in civilian and duty plate carriers. The Shooters Cut removes material from the upper corners to reduce interference with a shooter's arm and shoulder movement, making it a practical choice for dynamic use. Two profile options are available: flat, for carriers with rigid plate bays, and multicurve, which introduces a slight vertical bend to either side of the plate for a better contour against the body. Both profiles fit the same 10x12 plate pocket dimensions. Each set includes one front plate and one back plate.
The 10" x 12" Shooters Cut is accepted by the vast majority of plate carriers on the market. Both flat and multicurve profiles fit standard 10x12 plate pockets. If you are pairing these plates with a carrier that has a fixed rigid back panel, the flat profile is the appropriate choice. The multicurve profile suits soft-back plate pockets where the plate contacts the body directly. Contact us if you need help confirming fitment with a specific carrier.
These plates are Special Threat Rated Level III+, which means they are rated to defeat threats above the NIJ 0101.06 Level III standard. Level III stops 7.62x51 NATO M80 ball at up to 2,780 fps. The Level III+ designation covers additional threats beyond that baseline. For the specific rounds included in Predator Armor's Level III+ test protocol, contact us or refer to the product listing's test documentation.
These plates are independently tested and certified to NIJ 0101.06 standards by NTS-Chesapeake, an NIJ-approved testing facility accredited by NVLAP and A2LA to ISO 17025. The Level III+ designation is a Special Threat Rating and sits outside the standard NIJ CPL listing tiers. For current CPL listing status of specific variants, check the NIJ Compliant Products List at nij.ojp.gov.
The base coat provides durable surface protection only — it does not mitigate fragmentation or spall. The optional Kevlar lining contains fragmentation and spalling and also enhances the plate's ballistic performance. If your plate carrier does not already incorporate anti-fragmentation material, adding the Kevlar lining is strongly recommended.
Flat plates have no curvature and sit flush against rigid carrier back panels. Multicurve plates introduce a slight vertical bend to either side of the plate, allowing the plate to follow the natural contour of the torso. Multicurve generally improves comfort and reduces fatigue during extended wear. Both options share the same 10" x 12" Shooters Cut dimensions.
AR650 steel is harder than AR500, which allows Predator Armor to produce a thinner 0.25" plate while maintaining Level III+ protection. Steel plates in general outlast ceramic, Dyneema, and UHMWPE armor in terms of service life and impact resistance. Ceramic and UHMWPE plates are lighter but more susceptible to damage from drops and multi-hit degradation. The trade-off with steel is higher weight per plate at approximately 7.5 lbs.
These plates cannot be shipped to New York or Connecticut due to state body armor restrictions. They are subject to US export regulations. Under 18 U.S.C. § 931, anyone with a federal felony conviction for a crime of violence is prohibited from purchasing or possessing body armor.
