Sviridov (1915-1998)
Description:
Sviridov, a Russian composer of the 20th century, achieved success with "Six Romances" on poems by Pushkin in 1935 while still a student at a technical school, and went on to the Leningrad Conservatory, where he studied under Shostakovich. Sviridov's specialty is vocal music based on Russian folk themes, and his works with relatively simple melodies are widely loved, especially in Russia, even today. Snow Falling" is a small cantata based on a text by the novelist Pasternak, a lifelong favorite of Sviridov. The "Russian Drift," a collection of songs based on poems by the poet Esenin, whose works were banned until 1966, is a masterpiece that stands out for the mystique of its poetry. Naxos Japan
