This exceptional 19th century antique ōban-sized ukiyo-e woodblock print is a classic Oriental masterpiece by the legendary late-Edo period artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Stemming from his celebrated 1844 series, Shimazoroi onna Benkei (Women in Benkei-checked Fabrics), the artwork elegantly captures a fashionable woman holding an ornate fan. Kuniyoshi expertly showcases the textile trends of the era by highlighting the distinctive Benkei-jima checkerboard plaid pattern on her collar and under-robes. The print features fine calligraphic poetry inscriptions at the top, alongside the authentic signature cartouches of Kuniyoshi and the premier Edo publisher Ibakyu (Ibaraya Kyubei). It stands as a brilliant testament to the artistic innovation and street-style documentation that defined mid 19th century Japanese culture, making it a stellar addition to any fine Oriental art or print collection.
