'Gipps and La Trobe obviously enjoyed a very good rapport and their letters are frank and revealing.  in addition to their official correspondence, the wrote privately almost weekly and discussed all kinds of problems and personalities.  Far more of Gipps's letters have survived than those of La Trobe, and they reveal the Governor as a much more human figure than the traditional picture of him.  Collected and edited by Professor Shaw, the letters provide a commentary on the development of the Port Phillip District (the modern state of Victoria) in the early 1840s.  They discuss the problems posed by the conflict between the settlers and the Aborigines and the failure of the Aboriginal Protectorate.'
