Warhol made his first Marilyn silkscreens in 1962, within weeks of her death — taking a publicity photograph and repeating it in garish, shifting colour until the face became simultaneously everywhere and nowhere. The series is about fame, about reproduction, about the way celebrity consumes individuality. Still one of the most culturally loaded images in the history of art, and still one of the most visually arresting things you can put on a wall.
