Description:
A gifted violinist takes on the works of a genius Polish composer, Mieczyslaw Weinberg, who was born in Poland and later lived in Russia, but had a difficult life as a Jew. Weinberg's three sonatas, written in 1964, 1967, and 1979, are among the richest solo violin sonatas of the 20th century. Weinberg's works for solo violin are among the most richly creative and technically challenging of his works for violin, and their radical expressiveness is mesmerizing to listen to. Gidon Kremer, who was instrumental in bringing Weinberg's music back into the spotlight, has said that these works are as challenging as Bartók's sonatas. I am very happy that the world is slowly recognizing Weinberg as an important composer. For me personally, his works have always been a source of enthusiasm and inspiration."Recorded at the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival and the Studio Residence Palesius in Lithuania, this collection of Weinberg's Violin Sonatas is being released in honor of Kremer's 75th birthday.
