This is one of the discs from Brasil em Concerto, a project initiated by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is the first major project of its kind to have a Brazilian orchestra perform and record approximately 100 pieces of Brazilian music composed between the 19th and 20th centuries. The album features the chamber music of Claudio Santoro, who wrote some 600 compositions, including 14 symphonies. In 1983, when asked to compose a piece for a competition for young musicians in Rio de Janeiro, Santoro composed the "South American Fantasias," a collection of 15 pieces. Based on the twelve-tone and atonal style to which he was devoted at the time, these works, which are diverse in style and require a high level of technical skill, are now an important part of the repertoire of Brazilian instrumentalists. Tracks 2, 4, 6, and 8 are short pieces for oboe, bassoon, and clarinet, commissioned by three professors at the University of Brasilia and based on material from the "South American Fantasy. The Sonata for unaccompanied violin, placed last, is an experimental work by the young 21-year-old Santoro.It was premiered by Santoro himself, and its use of material is similar to that of his later "South American Fantasy.
