Masako HIRAO
Description:
Diego Ortiz (c.1510-c.70), born in Spain in the 16th century and active in Italy, wrote "The Theory of Variations," which shows how instrumental music and vocal polyphony of the time could be varied and decorated, and has been handed down as one of the most important documents. Masako Hirao, one of Japan's leading gamba players, has completed the first Japanese translation of this major work. This CD, planned and composed as a demonstration of the book, features a performance of the Resercada for viola da gamba based on the book. The way in which the simple series of notes written in the score are given diminutions (variations) and resurrected in splendor is a sight to behold. Including Ortiz's vocal works that are unknown to the public, this is an epoch-making album that will bring you in touch with the true nature of Renaissance music. LM RECORDS/Kojima Recording
