Horses are not just man's greatest companion; they are incredible subjects for photographers. There are a number of places where you can shoot unique breeds surrounded by spectacular nature, such as Iceland and Mongolia, but few compare to the magnificence of the palominos in southern France.

This sunset shoot was one of the most spectacular experiences of my career; stood in a river of Camargue National Park, the local ranchers let out these beautiful beasts to gallop freely through the stunning surrounding landscapes.

The wilderness, creatures, and conditions could not have come together more perfectly, creating a scene that felt more like it was from a fantasy novel than it was from this world. To add to this ambiance in this shot, I made sure the horses were backlit, making their white coats gleam a golden hue around their silhouettes in the dusky light.

Including the sun in the frame dimmed the more distant horizons, but with the spray of the water, this created the illusion of an ethereal mist. Altogether, it created a more simple image than many I had taken that evening, but one that perhaps best captured the fairytale ambiance of this incredible experience and the otherworldly grace of these creatures.
