Samuel Barber has performed several works with piano accompaniment, using his exceptional baritone voice to express lyric poetry. Encouraged by his aunt, a well-known contralto singer at the Metropolitan Opera, he concentrated on practicing composition. Barber confronted the letters and words of the past and present with a high degree of culture and a strong passion for poetry, novels, autobiographies, diaries, and literary criticism of the time. As a result, the texts of his songs, by a wide variety of poets, have always been of the highest quality and broadest taste. His mischievous yet intellectual expression and restless melancholy can also be characterized. The performance will be presented by Mauro Borgioni (baritone), Leila Dione Ezra (soprano), and Elisabetta Lombardi (mezzo-soprano), three outstanding Italian singers active on the international stage, who will bring Barber's world to life with their superb singing. This project is also presented by pianist Filippo Farinelli, whose previous projects for Brilliant Classics include the complete works of Jolivet, Berg, Dallapiccola, and Ravel.
