Description:
This is a collection of works written for small orchestras, using folk songs and baroque music as materials. The composer's face is completely different from that of "The Planets," which may change your image of Holst. This disc is also useful for amateur orchestral music selection. The English composer Gustav Holst was for many years director of music at St. Paul's Girls' School in London, where he wrote the "St. Paul's Suite" for his students. It is Holst's most famous work for amateurs. The "Brook Green Suite," written shortly thereafter, is largely reminiscent of English folk songs. The rarely performed "Concerto for Two Violins" begins with a fugue-like scherzo, followed by a very beautiful duet by two solo violins. [Comment courtesy of I.V. Co.
