The most active quartet in Japan today, the Classical Quartet, has taken on the challenge of recording the complete works of Bartók. After recording "No. 5" in 1996 and giving a series of concerts in 1999 and 2005, the quartet finally released the complete works on CD. The exquisite ensemble pursues sharp rhythms, clear harmonies, and clarity of counterpoint, thus bringing the inner workings of the pieces into relief. The profound artistry that captivated Mozart and Beethoven in their later years is also on display in Bartók.
