Casella (1883-1947)
Description:
In Turin in the late 19th century, "Concerti popolari" (popular concerts) were held ahead of symphony orchestras throughout Italy. In 1923, several composers, including Casella and Maripiero, took advantage of this trend and established the "Society for New Music in Italy," which produced a series of new instrumental works. This album contains four small-scale works of colorful and contrasting character. The album includes Casella's classic and accessible Divertimento, Maripiero's mysterious piece, Donatoni's chamber music that is a little more neoclassical than Schoenberg's, and a concerto in which Ghedini pays homage to Bach and Beethoven. Recorded in 2013 by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio Italo-Swiss / Damian Iorio (conductor). (C)RS
