Art Pepper
Description:
This 1959 recording features famous modern jazz standards, backed by an 11-piece big band led by Marty Peach. The superb arrangement and Art Pepper's thrilling soloing make this an appealing piece. With his cool tone and simmering lyricism, Pepper became one of the very few medieval alto saxophonists who blazed a trail independent of bebop elder statesman Charlie Parker. The album, superbly arranged by Marty Paich, refines the lush, supple sound that Miles Davis brought to the groundbreaking session "Birth of Cool," which he had begun recording almost a decade earlier (like "Birth," "+Eleven" is kicked off with Denzil Best's "Move"). Pepper plays modern jazz standards by Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Gerry Mulligan, Sonny Rollins, and others with searing lyricism, surrounded by the LA scene's elite, including saxophone greats Herb Geller, Bill Perkins, and Med Flory.【パーソネル】Art Pepper (as,ts,cla) Pete Candoli (tp) Al Porcino(tp) Jack Sheldon (tp) Dick Nash (tb) Bob Enevoldsen(valve tb, ts)Vincent DeRosa(French horn) Herb Geller(as) Bud Shank(as) Charlie Kennedy(as) Bill Perkins(ts) Richie Kamuca(ts)Med Flory(bs) Russ Freeman(p) Joe Mondragon(b) Mel Lewis(ds) Marty Paich(arr, cond)
