Tobias Michael grew up in a musical family: his father was Rosier, a composer belonging to the Franco-Flemish school, and his younger brothers Christian and Samuel were also musicians. After serving in the court choir of Dresden, he studied theology in Leipzig and in 1619 became church organist of the Margrave of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen; in 1631 he succeeded Hermann Schein as cantor of Thomas Church, a position he held until 1657 (he was succeeded by He composed and performed many religious works and contributed to the musical development of Leipzig. Many of his works are in the style of the Venetian school popular in the 17th century and make full use of brilliant counterpoint, requiring a high level of skill in performance, but the Weser-Renaissance, led by Cordes, is a wonderful ensemble.
