My Soft Machine is a very personal account of Parks' experiences and growth in his 20s. He says, "The biggest events we've gone through-trauma, upbringing, vulnerability, etc.-are scattered across the world and our vision like snowflakes. This record is also a portrait, through my lens and body, of a life trapped in this special body, including mid-twenties anxiety, substance abuse by friends around me, my first love, PTSD/grief/self-destruction/joy handling, and running around the world with surprise and sensitivity.This is a quote from the film "The Souvenir" by Joanna Hogg. The film is a semi-autobiographical film by A24 and stars Tilda Swinton. It follows a young film student who falls in love with an older, charismatic man and is drawn into his addiction. In an early scene he says, 'We don't want to see life played out. We want to see the life we experience in this soft machine. From there, the title of the album became My Soft Machine."(Arlo Parks) "My Soft Machine" was nominated for two Grammy Awards (Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album), including four major categories at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, and was nominated for a Brit Award. It follows Arlo Parks' debut album, "Collapsed in Sunbeams," which was nominated for two Brit Awards (Best New Artist, Best Alternative Music Album) and won a Brit Award for Best New Artist, a Mercury Prize, and the BBC's Introducing Artist Of The Year Award. The album was released in the U.S. in 2007 and is available on CD and DVD.Collapsed in Sunbeams" reached #3 in the UK album charts and won Best Independent Album and UK Independent Breakthrough at the AIM Independent Music Awards. He was also nominated for Best New International Act at the BET Awards, and Parks himself was named the youngest ever supporter of UNICEF and ambassador for CALM, the UK's mental health charity (Parks will continue to work extensively with both charities until 2023).
