Mahler (1860-1911)
Description:
Painful! Mahler Mahler's symphonies and songs in chamber music formations are freely arranged for string quartet on this album. Performed by the Montreal string ensemble Colectif9, which has been presenting a number of classical works with innovative program structure and unique arrangements, the arrangements this time are by Bertin-Magi, who also plays contrabass. The arrangements are basically in line with the original works, which impressively convey the elements of each piece, but there are some surprises, such as a sudden deformation of the klezmer style. The arrangements and performances are also excellent, vividly conveying the content of the poems, such as "In my heart is a burning sword. The "Caro-like Fantasy" is a small piece in which the popular French composer Philippe Hersant freely collages phrases from Mahler's Symphony No. 1, but the piece does not soar as the original does; it ends as if fading away. The entire album closes with "Fantasy of Don Juan," a beautifully crafted piece that seems to pass off into the distance. Naxos Japan
