La Gerbe — The Sheaf — was one of Matisse's final large-scale cut-outs, completed in 1953 when he was 83. A burst of leaf forms in greens and blacks against white, it has the quality of something thrown upward and caught mid-flight. Joyful without being frivolous, energetic without effort. One of the last things he made before he died, and one of the most alive things in his entire catalogue.
