Description:
Ives' masterpiece "Holiday Symphony" sounded the grand dreams, nostalgia, and chaos of America. In the LP era, Columbia Records, under the initiative of its president Goddard Lieberson, made a series of recordings of Ives' works, which were little known at the time. Bernstein played a part in this effort, and his series of recordings with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra are a testament to that era of "enthusiasm," driven by an apostolic zeal to promote Ives. The "Holiday Symphony," which depicts an American holiday, has never been released in Japan, and the "Evening in Central Park" is notable for its use of Seiji Ozawa and others as co-conductors. The "Concerto for Orchestra" (1969, world premiere recording) by Elliott Carter, the eldest American conductor with close ties to Ives, is the only Carter recording by Bernstein.
