Verve was the Parisian art magazine that commissioned Matisse to design its covers from the early 1940s onward — a collaboration that gave him the freedom to experiment with pure colour and flat form at a time when painting had become physically difficult. Verve Noir is one of the most striking of these covers: a near-black field that makes the organic Matisse shapes seem to float. Bold enough to anchor a wall, refined enough to reward close attention.
