Messiaen, Olivier (1908-1992)
Description:
Even before he was 30 years old, Messiaen (1908-1992) had established an international reputation for his work. He entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris at the age of 11, and already from that time on had already made a brilliant achievement: he spent 11 years at the conservatory, acquiring a wide range of knowledge, and by the time of his graduation in 1930, he was already exploring his own techniques of exotic rhythms, birdcalls, and the relationship between sound and color. Later, he was appointed organist at the Church of Saint Trinité in Paris, a position he held until his death, and at every opportunity he would perform wonderful improvisations that thrilled the congregation. The Nativity of the Lord" is another work that clearly displays these characteristics, infusing the Christmas story of the "Nativity of the Lord" with remarkable grace, beauty, brilliance, and a strange sense of euphoria. The entire piece is composed of nine parts, each with its own subtitle. When listening to Messiaen's work, the first thing to do is to feel the resonance in your body. The hard words will follow naturally. Organist Tom Winpenny is the assistant master organist of this cathedral. Naxos Japan
