“The region of the Lower Murray, Lakes and Coorong lies to the south-east of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia.  Throughout the history of its European occupation, it has been on the main route travelled between the eastern Australian State and Adelaide.
Even before the first British settlers broke a track through the bush, and linked South Australia with the east, the local Aborigines, the Ngarrindjeri, knew of the white culture:  they were first introduced to each other not in person, but by a plague of smallpox which descended through the Upper Murray tribes, decimating the Aboriginal population.  The coming of European-borne disease was only a beginning of the contact between the two cultures.
A Diverse Land is a book concerned partly with the struggles between black and white.  Yet it is, hopefully, more than that.  The depiction of a struggle for supremacy extends beyond the cross-cultural battles, to the fights amongst groups within settler society, and to the battle between man and the land.”
