Nero Alexandrian Tetradrachm – Roman Egypt, Alexandria Mint
Struck during the reign of Emperor Nero (AD 54–68), this ancient billon tetradrachm was produced at the famous Alexandria Mint in Roman Egypt. Coins from Alexandria carried a distinct provincial style, often featuring bold portraits and dramatic reverse imagery that differed greatly from the silver denarii struck in Rome.
The obverse features a portrait of Nero facing right, displaying the thick neck and rounded facial features commonly associated with the emperor’s later coinage. The reverse depicts an eagle standing on a thunderbolt, a powerful symbol tied to Roman authority and divine power throughout the eastern provinces of the empire.
Alexandrian tetradrachms circulated heavily throughout Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean, serving as everyday commerce during one of Rome’s most turbulent and fascinating periods. These coins were struck in a debased silver alloy known as billon and often exhibit the rugged, heavily used appearance collectors have come to appreciate in Roman provincial coinage.
Specifications:
A solid example of Roman Egyptian coinage with strong historical appeal tied directly to one of Rome’s most infamous emperors.
