A Pinnacle of Scottish Banking History
Own an elite piece of numismatic art with this 1951 One Hundred Pounds Specimen. Issued by the Commercial Bank of Scotland (which later merged to become part of the Royal Bank of Scotland), the £100 denomination was an enormous sum of money in the mid-20th century, used almost exclusively for inter-bank transfers or by the ultra-wealthy. As a "Specimen," this note was produced by the printer to be used as a reference for banks and law enforcement to identify genuine notes.
Obverse (Front): Features a central portrait of Lord Cockburn (Henry Cockburn), the famous Scottish lawyer, judge, and literary figure. He is flanked by two allegorical seated figures representing agriculture and commerce. The vibrant green design is accented by a rainbow-colored "X" underprint.
Reverse (Back): Showcases a charming and highly detailed engraving of the Commercial Bank's Head Office in Edinburgh, surrounded by a scene of 19th-century street life, including horse-drawn carriages and Victorian figures.
Printer: Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Ltd. (BWC).
Watermark: Features a "Woman's Head" profile.
Issuer: The Commercial Bank of Scotland Ltd.
Denomination: One Hundred Pounds (£100).
Date: 3rd January 1951.
Pick Number: PS-335s.
Grading: PMG 63 Choice Uncirculated.
Condition Notes: Perforated with the word "SPECIMEN" at the bottom. PMG has noted "Printer's Annotation, Previously Mounted, Erasure" on the reverse of the holder. These are typical "archival" traits, as Specimen notes were often kept in printer's ledgers or mounted in sample books for decades.
Collector's Perspective: High-denomination Scottish notes are rare, but specimens of those notes are exceptionally scarce. This note represents the final series before the bank's historic merger. The level of engraving detail on the reverse is considered some of the finest ever produced by Bradbury Wilkinson. For a collector of "Large Format" British currency, this is an absolute anchor piece.
