Essential Services at Sea

The Ship's Serviceman rating was established in February 1944 in four specialty ratings: Ship's Serviceman B (barber) (SSMB), Ship's Serviceman C (cobbler) (SSMC), Ship's Serviceman L (laundryman) (SSML), and Ship's Serviceman T (tailor) (SSMT). In April 1948, the four specialty ratings were merged into a single rating with the abbreviation SH. Ship's Servicemen specialized as barbers, cobblers, laundrymen, store clerks, or tailors in pay grades E-3 and E-4.

SH personnel operated ship's stores where sailors could purchase personal items, snacks, toiletries, and other necessities. They managed barbershops where sailors got haircuts to maintain grooming standards. They operated laundries that cleaned uniforms and personal clothing. They provided tailoring services to alter and repair uniforms. These services were essential to maintaining morale and quality of life aboard ships, especially during long deployments.

Quality of Life Support

Ship's Servicemen managed retail operations, maintained inventory, ordered supplies, handled cash and credit transactions, and ensured that sailors had access to the goods and services they needed. They operated barbershops with professional standards, providing haircuts that met Navy grooming regulations. They managed laundry operations that kept uniforms clean and pressed. They provided tailoring services that ensured uniforms fit properly and looked professional.

SH personnel understood that their work was about more than just selling goods or providing services—it was about maintaining morale and helping sailors feel comfortable and professional. A well-stocked ship's store, a good haircut, clean uniforms, and properly fitted clothing all contributed to sailor welfare and unit cohesion.

On October 1, 2019, the Ship's Serviceman rating was renamed Retail Specialist (RS), reflecting the modern focus on retail operations and customer service. The legacy of Ship's Servicemen lives on in the RS rating, which continues to operate ship's stores and provide essential services to sailors around the world.
