Clear 1774 Newcastle hallmarks of John Langlands I 🔍
John Langlands I was one of the most important silversmiths of Newcastle upon Tyne 🏰, where his workshop defined provincial silver of the late 18th century.
1754: Entered partnership with John Goodrick after the death of their master, Isaac Cookson.
1757: Continued the thriving business alone after Goodrick’s passing.
1778–1795: Partnered with John Robertson I, creating Langlands & Robertson, one of the most prolific and respected provincial firms of the era.
After his death in 1793, the workshop was continued by his wife Margaret, his son Robert II, and later his widow Dorothy until 1814.
The Langlands workshops became especially renowned for their finely made sugar tongs 🥄 and domestic silver, rivalling the output of leading London silversmiths.
