Regal Men in Turbans Walking, Naive c. 1930s Watercolor Signed (Captioned?) This is the last (except one I framed for myself) from a wonderful batch of c. 1930s watercolor drawings I found in Maine a couple of years ago.  For a while it seemed to me all of them were done by the same person but now I think by different students in the same class, who were given the same format and the same (wonderfully unusual) watercolor palette to work with. In terms of subject matter, this is/was the odd one of the bunch; the others depicted figures, mostly children, engaged in various sorts of small dramas in and around houses in what felt like a neighborhood setting. Here, in contrast, what looks like a scene set in India, with two elegant men in turbans walking a path through a sea of green. Whether the John Locke written at lower left is a reference to the English philosopher, physician and "father of liberalism" (who studied India extensively, with a particular interest in Hindu custom and belief) --or the name of the student who drew this, I am not sure! But what a lovely thing, full of grace and nuance, I want to describe it as balletic, and quietly majestic.

Paper: 9" x 12". Very good condition. Watercolor and graphite of natural colored, construction type paper.
