This is the famous Penny Red, issued by Great Britain in 1841 as a successor to the Penny Black. It features the left-facing profile of Queen Victoria, designed by William Wyon and engraved by Charles Heath. The stamp shows the corner letters “J” (right) and “J” (left), used as security measures against forgery. Printed in red-brown, it was imperforate in its earliest printings, later perforated as seen in this example. The Penny Red is one of the most widely collected classic issues, prized for its variety of plates, shades, and cancellations. A key piece for any Victorian or classic British collection.
