๐ŸŽ British Equestrian Historic Sporting Oil Painting โ€“ Joe Mercer on Champion Racehorse Brigadier Gerard, No. 2 โ€“ Late 20th Century Portrait After Michael Jeffery (1914โ€“2013)

๐ŸŽฏ Subject & Medium:

A distinguished British equestrian sporting portrait, this oil on canvas captures the legendary jockey Joe Mercerastride the iconic Brigadier Gerard, presented in full side-profile. The poised stance of the bay racehorse, marked with the number 2, evokes discipline and elegance on the open course.

Mercer wears his classic racing attireโ€”light blue silks, white breeches, black boots, and pink capโ€”and sits with quiet authority, reins in hand. Behind them, a softly rendered rural backdrop of rolling hills, lush grass, and a cloud-streaked sky adds atmosphere and grandeur to the composition.

๐ŸŽจ Medium: Oil on canvas
๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Title: Joe Mercer on No. 2 Brigadier Gerard
๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ Unsigned โ€“ British School
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Date: Circa 1990s
๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Frame: Original gilt moulded frame

๐ŸŽจ Composition & Technique:

Executed in a classic realist sporting style, the composition is centered and balanced, highlighting both the strength of the horse and the composure of the rider. The horseโ€™s deep bay coat is painted in sienna, chestnut, and dark mahogany tones, with soft highlights suggesting sheen and fine grooming.

Smooth brushwork is evident throughout, particularly in the subtle sky, while the reins, saddlecloth, and boots are rendered with crisp detailing. Light and shadow are used effectively to enhance depth, and the paletteโ€”warm greens, earthy browns, and soft sky bluesโ€”evokes the calm before a high-stakes race.

This is a carefully executed and aesthetically rich piece, with a quiet intensity that honours the legacy of both horse and rider.

๐Ÿ‡ About the Rider โ€“ Joe Mercer (1934โ€“2021):

Joseph Mercer OBE was one of Britainโ€™s most accomplished flat racing jockeys. Over a professional career spanning nearly four decades (1947โ€“1985), Mercer achieved 2,810 British wins. Known for his calm demeanor and race-day precision, he was nicknamed "Smokin' Joe."

He rode for prominent trainers including Dick Hern, Henry Cecil, and Peter Walwyn, and was Champion Apprentice (1952 & 1953) and Champion Jockey (1979). His most memorable rides came aboard Brigadier Gerard, with whom he formed one of the most successful horse-jockey partnerships in British racing history.

๐Ÿด About the Horse โ€“ Brigadier Gerard (1968โ€“1989):

Brigadier Gerard is widely considered one of the greatest British racehorses of the 20th century, winning 17 of his 18 races between 1970 and 1972. Trained by Major Dick Hern and ridden exclusively by Joe Mercer, he is a true icon of British flat racing.

๐Ÿ“œ Major Wins Include:
๐Ÿ† 2000 Guineas (1971)
๐Ÿ† St Jamesโ€™s Palace Stakes
๐Ÿ† Sussex Stakes
๐Ÿ† Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (twice)
๐Ÿ† Eclipse Stakes
๐Ÿ† King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes

๐Ÿ… Honours:

  • British Horse of the Year (1972)

  • Timeform Top Rated Horse (1971 & 1972)

His only defeat came in the 1972 Benson & Hedges Gold Cup to Roberto, but his career remains nearly unmatched.

๐Ÿ–Š๏ธ Signature:

This work is unsigned, a common trait of many privately commissioned British School paintings in the sporting tradition. However, the skilled rendering, anatomical precision, and compositional structure clearly reflect the hand of a trained equestrian artist with a deep understanding of racing heritage.

๐ŸŽจ In the Style of Michael Jeffery (1914โ€“2013):

This painting is done in the style of Michael Jeffery, the celebrated British sporting artist known for his elegant side-profile portraits of renowned racehorses and their jockeys. Like Jefferyโ€™s works, this piece exhibits:

  • Accurate equine anatomy

  • Balanced and centered composition

  • Atmospheric naturalistic backgrounds

  • A focus on the calm, poised strength of its subjects

Jefferyโ€™s influence is unmistakable in the painterly brushwork, classical restraint, and the focus on the dignity of horse and rider. This painting proudly continues the tradition of British post-war equestrian art.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Frame:

Presented in its original giltwood frame, featuring classic moulding and subtle leaf motifs. The rich gold tones enhance the warmth of the scene and provide a museum-quality display aesthetic.
