A fine, decorative and increasingly hard-to-find Victorian Revival novelty mustard pot, modelled as an owl and finished in silver plate. The piece is richly worked with realistically chased/repoussé plumage, stands on charming claw feet, and opens via a neatly engineered hinged head. The defining detail—and the feature that photographs superbly—is the pair of red glass button eyes 👀🟥.
Owl-form mustard pots are a recognised collector category within British decorative metalwork and “objects of vertu”, celebrated for their sculptural presence and whimsical table-side appeal. The classic Victorian specification is well documented as featuring a hinged head, glass eyes, and often a liner and mouse-terminal spoon.
Clearly stamped R.B. & Co beneath/on the feet. This mark is associated with Roberts & Belk of Sheffield, a significant historic manufacturer of silver and electroplated wares, with well-recorded trade development and registered marks.
For clarity: this is silver plate (manufacturer-marked plated ware), rather than sterling silver submitted to the assay hallmarking system—entirely correct and typical for electroplated objects of this type.
This piece is made in the Victorian Revival manner, reflecting the celebrated 19th-century tradition of British novelty condiment ware. To illustrate the established collector demand for the owl mustard pot form, closely related Victorian examples by leading makers (including Fox) have been catalogued by major salerooms such as Christie’s, Bonhams, Tennants, and Batemans, often noting the same hallmark characteristics: hinged head, glass eyes, and frequently a glass liner and mouse-terminal spoon.
Provenance: Private collection, by descent, and curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
Please note: this example is missing the original blue glass liner and the mouse spoon. These components are frequently referenced in catalogued Victorian owl mustard pots and are commonly used by collectors as completeness benchmarks.
Offered in fine used vintage condition, showing wear consistent with age and careful handling, including minor scuffs, scratches and marks/staining in places (please refer to photographs). Overall, it remains a strong display piece with excellent character.
