The stories of Gabriel and Alejandro, written by Chuckberry J. Pascual, have captured the hearts of modern Filipino booklovers. Whether with absolute hope and empathy for the bakla and his straight lover, or disdain for their doomed relationship, readers have been both fascinated and enthralled. Now, with a translation by Ralph Semino Galán, these stories will come alive again in a different language. His translation of the Pascual stories is often marked with a conscious effort to preserve and maintain the original. Yet, because he is a writer himself and a poet at that, Galán leaves his own patterns and markings in the text. Mark Polizzotti, an American translator, called this “providing a new way of looking at a text, and through that text, a world.” What happens is that we get to read the stories in this book, which are now conjured by these two wonderful writers, in another light. And we are glad because of that.
