US Army Viet Nam War Era Green Nylon Cord Ranger Beads Pace Counter
As implied by the name, these pace counter beads were most famously used by the United States Army Rangers on LRRPs (Long Range Recon Patrols) as an easy way of tracking the distance they traveled. Used as a solution to the thick, dense jungles of Vietnam that disrupted easy movement making it hard for a solider to track the distance he traveled, an experienced solider could easily and extremely accurately track the distance he traveled by using ranger beads such as these.
Featuring 13 beads split into 2 sections, the nine beads represent 100-meter increments with the other 4 beads representing 1,000-meters each. The user must simply pull 1 bead for every 100-meters/1000-meters traveled, then add up each of the pulled beads and their distance value to know the distance they traveled. This allows the user to track the distance they've traveled for up to 5 kilometers before they must reset the beads and restart the count to add additional distance traveled. Great for long hikes!
