Durado is the poet of the ordinary, the commonplace. Even the most tragic of events become everyday in his voice. But this voice is luminous with the poet’s tenderness and humanity, as if to say, Reality is enough, it should be enough. The hard core of his poetry is the solidity of the real, spoken in the tough, blunt speeches of plain folk telling their truth.

Multiawarded poet and essayist Durado’s poetry occurs in medias res—the poems plunge the readers promptly into sensations, perceptions, and levels of reality, assiduous and irrefutable. The lives in these poems are ours and appear familiar—it seems, at times, as though there is no divide between poet and readers, and then the poet astonishes us by pushing us to depths that initially we imagined we had attained by ourselves but never quite did until these poems. The language of the poems belongs to us. Durado writes them for us, he bestows upon us those we desire, and we dread marvelously. Is there anything more generous than this?
