This is a classic Great Britain 1d Red, issued in 1841 as the successor to the world-famous Penny Black. It features the left-facing profile of Queen Victoria, engraved by Charles Heath and printed by Perkins, Bacon & Co. The stamp is printed in red-brown, with check letters in the lower corners – in this case “A – J”.
The design is similar to the Penny Black but printed in red to allow clearer cancellation with the black Maltese Cross and later numeral obliterators, like the one seen here. The Penny Red went through numerous plate numbers, making it a rich field for specialist collectors.
This particular copy is perforated (introduced in 1854), distinguishing it from earlier imperforate issues. The cancellation is a numeral obliterator, commonly used in the mid-Victorian period.
For collectors, the Penny Red is a cornerstone of British philately, valued not only for its connection to the dawn of postage stamps but also for its many collectible varieties in shades, plates, and cancellations.
