Vitamin E, called the "vitamin of youth", is involved in many important processes in the human body. This is a group of compounds called tocopherols (topherols and tocotrienols with similar physiological activity).

Together with vitamins A, D and K, they belong to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. This means that they are stored in the body (and not excreted in urine or sweat, like water-soluble vitamins), mainly in fatty tissue and the adrenal glands. Vitamin E is synthesized only by plants, although it can also be found in some animal products.

The richest natural sources of vitamin E are seeds, nuts and fats (oils) obtained from them: sunflower, pumpkin seeds, sesame, almond, walnuts, wheat germ, grape seeds.

The oil form is therefore the best way to administer this vitamin both with the diet and in dietary supplements.

Additionally, the absorption of the "vitamin of youth" by the body is supported by other vitamins, such as vitamin A, a complex of B vitamins, vitamin C, manganese, selenium, phosphorus and essential fatty acids (EFA).

It is worth knowing that there are various chemical forms of vitamin E available on the market:

  • D-alpha-tocopherol,
  • DL-alpha-tocopherol,
  • D-alpha-tocopheryl acetate,
  • DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate,
  • D-alpha-tocopheryl succinate

Compounds starting with DL are synthetic (artificial) forms of vitamin E obtained chemically.

Compounds starting with D come from natural sources.

The natural form of vitamin E has been found to be stronger than
the synthetic form. The US Drug and Food Administration (FDA), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) have confirmed that the equivalent of 1 gram of natural vitamin E is 1.36 grams of synthetic vitamin. However, the latest research in this area shows that the advantage of absorbing
a natural vitamin over a synthetic one may be up to twofold.

Tocopherols (vitamin E) are quite resistant to high temperatures, but they degrade during freezing,
oxygen access and exposure to sunlight, so it is worth storing, for example, oils and nuts in a closed container.

Vitamin E is one of the strongest antioxidants, it neutralizes free radicals that destroy cell DNA.

It prevents the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) present in both cell membranes and blood. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, it delays the skin aging process - hence the name "vitamin of youth". Vitamin E, apart from its antioxidant properties, also has other functions in the body, e.g. it participates in the regulation of the activity of protein kinase C, an enzyme involved in the transmission of signals within cells.

Only a well-balanced diet fully meets the body's needs for vitamin E. Unfortunately, in times of ubiquitous highly processed food, excessive professional activity, and often stressful situations, it is difficult to provide the body with the necessary amounts of this valuable vitamin. According to experts, the daily requirement for vitamin E varies and depends, among others, on: on age, gender and physiological condition.
