This stamp from the Ottoman Empire, issued around 1913, features the Obelisk of Theodosius located in the Hippodrome of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). The design shows the ancient Egyptian obelisk surrounded by detailed ornamental borders with Arabic script and the imperial tughra (calligraphic signature of the Sultan). Inscribed “POSTES OTTOMANES,” it was part of the later definitive issues of the Ottoman postal service, which combined historical landmarks with traditional motifs. Collectors value this issue for its historical significance, as it reflects the Empire’s effort to modernize its postal system while preserving its rich cultural heritage.
