The two-volume critical edition contains extant works of a local Filipino composer, Julio Nakpil (1867-1990). A son of a jeweler-musician from Quiapo, Manila, Nakpil's extant outputs are some of the earliest musical pieces composed by a Filipino, and printed, published, and circulated in Manila in the late nineteenth-century Spanish colonial period. He, too, was a revolutionario who actively participated in the fight against Spanish colonizers. Writing music in this dynamic but tumultuous period in the country's history, Nakpil as studies show, contributed dramatically to the formation of a culturally based conception of Filipino nationalism in music. He was, no doubt, a product of his times and his creative works were representative of this Philippine music development.
