This is a classic Great Britain 1 Penny Red from the reign of Queen Victoria, issued between 1854–1857. The design features the iconic profile of Queen Victoria facing left, based on the earlier Penny Black but printed in red. The stamp includes corner letter check positions “I–J”, which identify its place on the printing plate. It bears a bold numeral cancellation “491”, which corresponds to a specific post town in Britain (often collected by specialists in numeral obliterators). The stamp is perforated (introduced from 1854 onward), replacing the earlier imperforate versions. A cornerstone of Victorian philately, this issue is prized by collectors for its plating varieties and postal history significance.
