A Tale of Two Colors: Nigeria’s Monetary History This set features two distinct versions of the Nigerian One Pound note, documenting the nation's aesthetic and political changes during the late 1960s. Both notes are in Very Fine (VF) condition, showing honest circulation folds but retaining crisp imagery and deep ink saturation.
Note 1: 1 Pound (Top - Grey/Green) - P-4
Era: Issued between 1960 and 1967.
Design: Features a man harvesting fruit from a palm tree, a symbol of Nigeria's agricultural wealth.
Significance: This was the standard currency of the early First Republic.
Note 2: 1 Pound (Bottom - Red/Crimson) - P-10
The "Emergency" Issue: This vibrant red note was issued in 1968 during the height of the Nigerian Civil War (Biafran War).
The Purpose: The federal government changed the color of the notes to "de-monetize" currency that had been seized or held in the secessionist Eastern Region, making the old green notes worthless in favor of these new red ones.
Design: Features the same iconic palm harvesting vignette but with a completely revamped, higher-contrast color scheme and updated security guilloche patterns.
