The vintage rugs offered in the Hemp Bouquet collection were all handwoven in the Anatolian countryside by village women for their home use. Most date from the mid 1900s. There are regional similarities in design and motifs, yet no two rugs are the same and the diversity is astounding.

This pure hemp rug from Tokat province in the inland Black Sea region of Anatolia was sewn from five strips of warp-faced cloth woven on a simple nomadic style tripod loom. The medium grey background is accented with a dyed black triple and single hemp selvage stripes, and more subtle, lighter grey hemp stripes. Grey hemp results from natural staining by fungi that appear when dry hemp stalks are wetted by rain. Although accidental, the stain is colorfast and the subtle variations in tone add variety and depth to hemp textiles. Every other strip is reversed to accentuate the pairs of single selvage stripes. The ends are rolled and stitched with hemp thread to prevent raveling and fraying.
The simple aesthetics of this vintage rug makes it an excellent addition to any room.
