The Victron MultiPlus Compact 12/1600/70-16 is a combined inverter and battery charger in a single compact unit, designed for 12V battery systems with 230V AC output. It is suited to marine, vehicle, off-grid and backup power installations where space is limited but reliable AC power and efficient charging are both required.
The MultiPlus Compact combines a pure sine wave inverter with a high-current battery charger and an AC transfer switch in one enclosure. When an AC source such as shore power or a generator is connected, the unit charges the battery bank and passes AC power through to connected loads. When the AC source is removed or fails, the transfer switch activates in under 20 milliseconds, maintaining power to critical loads without interruption.
The 70A charger uses Victron's adaptive three-stage charging (bulk, absorption, float) with an automatic equalisation option for flooded batteries. The adaptive algorithm monitors how long the battery spends in absorption and adjusts future charge cycles accordingly, which reduces overcharging on batteries that are regularly topped up. PowerControl and PowerAssist are particularly useful in marina or vehicle installations where the available AC supply is limited: the unit will draw only what the source can provide and make up any shortfall from the battery.
VE.Bus connectivity means the MultiPlus Compact can be integrated into a wider Victron system. It can be monitored and configured remotely via a GX device such as the Cerbo GX, and settings including charge voltages, transfer switch thresholds and input current limits can be adjusted using VEConfigure software without opening the unit.

Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician familiar with DC battery systems and 230V AC wiring. The unit must be connected to an appropriately rated 12V battery bank with correctly sized DC cabling and fusing. The 16A AC input should be protected by a suitable circuit breaker. For any grid-connected or building installation in the UK, compliance with BS 7671 wiring regulations is required and work should be carried out or verified by a qualified installer. VE.Bus configuration requires Victron's VEConfigure software and a suitable interface cable or GX device.
