Elaine Haxton had a varied and rich career in the arts. She travelled extensively and was part of an artistic enclave that included Russell Drysdale, Donald Friend and William Dobell (her portrait of whom was a finalist in the 1941 Archibald). A painter and printmaker, she also studied theatre design in New York, and designed ballet costumes and sets in Dutch New Guinea.

‘Chinese Landscape’ is a testament to Haxton’s graphic ability. It is engrossing, a detailed telling of its subject. She captures the grandeur of the landscape alongside the tiny lives that alight it. Trees, people, houses, mountains and temples can all be found in her composition.

In 1956, Haxton was the only female artist included in Australia’s delegation to China – an experience that perhaps inspired ‘Chinese Landscape’. She was forever finding inspiration in the places she visited. In 1943 she won the Sulman Prize for a restaurant mural, and was honoured with retrospectives at Stadia Graphics and Hamer Mathew Galleries.

For collectors of important works on paper, landscapes and female artists ‘Chinese Landscape’ is extremely rare to market and a compelling find.
