Originally known simply as 'Bird', this G. F. Bodley design was first woven as a silk in 1976 and renamed after Nicholas Hilliard, the Renaissance miniaturist. The design was found as a sketch in one of Bodley's books dating to around 1870. 'Hilliard' is seemingly inspired by a medieval tapestry style called millefleur or 'a thousand flowers', but shows strong influences from William Morris, with whom Bodley worked for a time. The Watts 'Hilliard' is available in a large variety of colours, as well as in lustrous gilt combinations.
