Watts & Co.'s 'Fleur De Lys', designed and much beloved by Augustus Pugin, presents a simple, repeating pattern of the stylised lily. This motif has long been associated with the French crown and is a common heraldic ornament, denoting royalty and a noble house. One legend identified it as the lily given by the Virgin Mary to Clovis, King of the Franks at his baptism in AD 508 (or 496). When Charlemagne was crowned emperor in AD 800, Pope Leo III is also said to have presented him with a blue banner covered with golden fleurs de lys.
Our 'Fleur de Lys' fabric is woven in England from silk and lumiyarn threads and we are pleased to offer it in two colours.
