Ryukyu Indigo Dye
Ryukyu indigo dyeing is an ancient Okinawan dyeing tradition using Yama-ai, a perennial plant from the Acanthaceae family, as its raw material. Harvested during both summer and winter, the branches and leaves are soaked in water and naturally fermented, creating a rich, mud-like indigo dye.
Each garment is repeatedly immersed in the indigo vat—approximately 15 to 30 times—to gradually build layers of colour. This meticulous process produces a vivid purple-blue hue with remarkable depth and nuance.
Over time, the colour continues to evolve, developing a unique patina and richness through wear. No two pieces are exactly alike, making each garment quietly one of a kind.
