In the 1950s, the demand for divers’ watches increased due to their essential role in the conquest of the oceans, in professional deep-sea diving and in the scientific exploration of the seas. Aquatic sports and nautical leisure activities are also booming, and amateur enthusiasts need instruments that can safely be worn during their exciting excursions under the water's surface.

In 1957, Breitling simultaneously launched two ground-breaking diving watches: a time-only diver (Ref. 1004) and a chronograph (Ref. 807). Both named SuperOcean, these two watches embody two different visions of nautical sports: the elegant time-only (Ref. 1004) is intended for the gentleman who cares about his style even while at the beach, while the sportier chronograph (Ref. 807) is definitively more for the seasoned diver who needs a watch for performance and reliability.

A superb 'Abyss' dial with contrasting orange accents on the rich matte black makes for a striking design which comprises three 'concentric ringed' subdials, a date aperture at 3 o'clock and applied baton hour markers, with luminous inserts along with corresponding chunky pencil hands with luminous inserts, for increased visibility in low light. A watch of burly proportions, at 44mm this watch wears prominently on the wrist and yet is also very comfortable. 

This particular watch is supplied on an original Breitling black rubber strap with a folding Breitling clasp which looks great. The chronograph version of the Superocean is an instrument which was built to be water-resistant to 500 m (1,650 ft) and to this end has screw-down chronograph pushers to aid this, and combines a sporty and dynamic aesthetic with a high-performance self-winding movement, chronometer-certified by the COSC. A proper divers tool watch with chronograph complications that will withstand the environments it was built for!

In fantastic pre-owned condition with only very light signs of wear, the watch is supplied as a set with its original box and paperwork and additional orange rubber sports watch band (not branded). A superb buy.
