About Holuhraun

The Holuhraun volcanic eruption began on August 29, 2014, and continued its fiery display until February 27, 2015. Known for its immense scale, this eruption was at least eight times larger than the famous Eyjafjallajökull eruption of 2010, making it the largest by volume in Iceland since the 1783-1784 Laki eruption.

Bárðarbunga, an awe-inspiring stratovolcano, lies beneath the mighty Vatnajökull glacier, cloaked in approximately 1,640 feet of ice. Stretching 124 miles long and 16 miles wide, this extensive volcanic system boasts a caldera approximately 27 square miles in area, up to 6 miles wide, and plunging to depths of 2,300 feet. Its highest peak reaches an impressive 6,591 feet, crowning it as Iceland's second-highest mountain. The Holuhraun eruption fissure spanned about 2 miles, unleashing a steady flow of lava that formed a new lava field covering over 28 square miles.
