Description:
ECM presents the first duo release from saxophonist Mark Turner and pianist Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus), who met at a jam session in New York in the 1990s. They joined the Billy Hart Quartet about 10 years after they met, and have released "All Our Reasons" in 2012 and "One is the Other" in 2014 on ECM. In this album, they pursue modern chamber music with a focus on original compositions. Regarding their respective interactions in the duo, Iverson says, "Mark makes me listen to the sound more, even though I'm always trying to listen to it. But I have to have a good ear to start working hand in hand with Mark, and I have to be very sharp. Because Mark demands a higher level of truth and beauty than most people. Not only the sound he plays, but his perfection, his perfection as an artist and as a human being is all sublime. That's why so many musicians respect his great skills as an improviser.Mark said, "What I like about Ethan is that he plays his music in a very personal way, especially when it comes to harmonic realms and voice reading. This is especially true in the case of harmonic realms and voice readings. If he plays the same chord as another piano player, that chord sounds unique." (Personnel) Mark Turner: tenor saxophone; Ethan Iverson: piano
